Fitness Fun and the Clip Chase!

Wow, It has been a while! About 2 weeks before Christmas break after school classes ended, and we just started up this week. All in all it was a great break, however I am glad to be back! So, with the new batch of Fitness Kids we had to get things started right!

Here is a great warm-up activity you might be able to use! It’s called the “Clip Chase”!

The whole idea behind the game is to get kids moving and ready to exercise! The rules are simple enough;

Each participant gets 2 or 3 clothes clips (big ones that don’t pinch too hard)
Box off a reasonable sized area with cones. This depends on how many people are playing. You don’t want to give too much space, but too little and you’ll be bumping into each other!
Set a time of 45-60 seconds to connect as many clips on the rest of the players.
Clips can be put on clothing, hair, shoes, etc..

*** Clips can not be put on any part of the skin***

If needed make sure everyone knows to be careful not to hurt anyone.

Show and Tell

Show and Tell really is a great foundation to build on with public speaking. Young or old, speaking comes a lot easier when you are comfortable and know what your talking about.

This simple warm-up activity can really boost your student participation during a public speaking class.

Some of the advantages of having a show and tell include;

learn to speak and listen
learn how to be an audience and introduce themselves
learn how to ask inquiry based questions
learn to make connections between student responses
anticipate and observe
practice critical reasoning skills
practice storytelling
learn same and different
use vocabulary- doll, computer, toy car, puppet
use descriptive language
say thank you
increase confidence

Sell, sell, sell!

We just started a new exercise in my Creative After School class. Over the next couple of weeks students will be working on a persuasive speech or a commercial. As a warm-up activity I asked each student to find a random item within the classroom and quickly come up with some key selling points. Students were asked to create a need for the product, discuss how it can benefit the consumer, and deliver their message in an engaging way.

I love how kids minds work! Check it out!

Having just finished up our Crazy Talk videos, here are the final products! These kids are amazing! They wrote their own script, practiced speaking with partners, and record. It was great watching each child create something all of their own!

Examples Needed – Teacher body language in the classroom

Dear Teachers,

If you are a teacher/educator would you please take a few minutes and respond to this request. I am in the process of gathering examples of how body language is used in the classroom. The idea is to help create an awareness of the Non-verbal signals that teachers use. I am looking for examples of body language that may be inhibiting learning, as well as examples of positive teacher body language. If you would be willing, please give some examples of both positive and non-effective body language that you have either experienced or have observed in the classroom. You can just leave your information below as a response to this post.

Weird, wacky and uh…. did I say weird? I guess you never know who could show up to a Creative Public Speaking class =) Over the last couple of weeks we have been writing scripts, practicing and recording our monologues. Some students created story lines with each other, some were straight faced and some… well, to use their words, lost their minds! Below are some of our creations! Enjoy!
